An Ounce of Prevention is Worth a Pound of Cure
Prehabilitation – “prehab” for short – is a physical therapy program started 6-12 weeks prior to a scheduled orthopedic or other surgery.
The goal is simple:
To improve your range of motion, strength, balance, endurance, etc. prior to surgery in order to maximize post-surgical outcomes.
The stronger you are going into surgery, the better equipped you will be to fight the effects of limited mobility and muscle atrophy following surgery.
While prehab is often recommended prior to orthopedic surgeries such as hip and knee replacements, it is also shown to be beneficial prior to oncologic and cardiovascular surgery as well. Many studies show improved post-surgical outcomes such as range of motion and extremity strength as a result of participation in prehab programs, however, there are additional factors to consider that can be even more enticing. For example, some studies show that decreased length of hospital stay and decreased overall medical costs are possible following participation in prehab programs. For you, that could mean a quicker return home and to the activities you enjoy…gardening, dancing, and pickleball!
